Opening Hymn:

Troparion, Tone 8:

You descended from on high, O merciful One. You accepted burial for three days to free us from our passions. O Lord, our Resurrection and our Life, glory to you.

Troparion, Tone 4:

Father Anthony, you imitated Elijah in his zeal and you followed John the Baptist in his holy way of life. You took up your abode in the desert and strengthened the world by your prayers. Intercede with Christ our God that he may save our souls.

The following is read:

On January 17, we commemorate our venerable father Anthony the Great.

Did heaven hold anyone more illustrious than Anthony, at the moment when it welcomed that first and greatest monk? On the seventeenth, he received heaven as his patrimony.

By his holy prayers, O our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.

On this day, the Sunday before the beginning of the Lenten Triodion, we commemorate the repentance of the tax- collector, the Holy Apostle Zacchaeus, who desired to behold Christ.

Zacchaeus’ conversion in this manner offers us two important lessons: first, God’s compassion and the signs of sincere and active repentance, and second, the fact that correction of evil as far as one is able is an inseparable proof of sincere repentance. In this manner the good Zacchaeus exceeded the ordinances of the Mosaic Law in his generosity, for which cause he was counted worthy of the Lord’s blessing.

Through the prayers of the Holy Apostle Zacchaeus, O Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.

Hymn of the Incarnation

– Rejoice, you wise myrrh-bearing women, the first to see Christ’s resurrection. You announced to his apostles the restoration of the whole world.

– Triumphing by strong abstinence over the prince of darkness and his powers, Anthony was a victorious conqueror, the glory of the ascetics and boast of those leading the monastic life.

Do not neglect the gift you have, which was conferred on you through the prophetic word with the imposition of hands of the presbyterate. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” And he came down quickly and received him with joy. When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvationc has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”

At that time: Jesus came down with them and stood on a stretch of level ground. A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured. Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him because power came forth from him and healed them all. And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.

Profession of Faith

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible; and in one Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, the only-begotten, born of the Father before all ages. Light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in essence with the Father; through whom all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven and was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. He rose on the third day according to the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he is coming again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Creator of Life, who proceeds from the Father. Together with the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified; he spoke through the prophets. Rising from the grave, you raised the dead. You lifted up Adam and Eve rejoice in your resurrection. The whole world celebrates your resurrection from the dead, O Most Merciful One.

Leader: Most holy Trinity, Consubstantial Power, Indivisible Kingdom, Cause of all good things, look favorably upon me, a sinner, at this present hour. Take away all the defilement of my mind and enlighten my understanding that I may always praise, glorify, and say:
